North Branch, Minn.~ Hay Days may be known for snowmobiles, but sixteen off the best side-by-side racers from across the country lined up for the inaugural round of Championship UTV on Saturday. At the end of the day, it was the two most dominant Midwest drivers battling it out in the final of the head-to-head showdown.

Can-Am’s Kyle Chaney was easily the most dominant Pro Modified driver during the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League season in 2019, winning six out of seven events. His Pro Stock counterpart CJ Greaves was equally as impressive, winning all seven LOMSCL races. On Saturday, they finally faced off in the final for the chance to be crowned as the first winner of a Championship UTV event.

The pair was expected to square-off early in the bracket-style format, with both winning their first-round race. But Greaves had his hands full in the second and was upset by Polaris’ Jason Luburgh, pushing him into the Losers Bracket.

Meanwhile, Chaney kept pushing his way through the Winners Bracket, winning against Arctic Cats Joe Dresel in round one, Polaris’ Andy Ives in round two and Luburgh in round three. To get into the final, Chaney had to dispatch former GNCC champion Zak Zakowski for the chance to finally go head-to-head the survivor of the Loser Bracket.

With the double elimination format, Greaves had extra racing on his schedule. He worked his way back to the final by holding off recent Crandon World Cup winner RJ Anderson and Can Am’s Elliott Burns before getting revenge on Luburgh. Back-to-back wins against fellow Yamaha driver Rodney Van Eperen and number one qualifier Zakowski put Greaves into the anticipated showdown with Chaney.

In the final, Greaves got the early jump on Chaney, but the two-time GNCC champion was able to quickly get back around the defending LOMSCL Pro 4 title holder. From there, Chaney held position before Greaves rolled to the side with a mechanical issue, forcing him out of the race.

The track was very tight, but ISOC laid it out perfect to make close racing,” said Chaney after the event. “The bracket-style, double-elimination format was awesome!”

Championship UTV will hit the Hay Days, purpose-built track again on Sunday. The sixteen-driver field will reset with qualifying at 8:00 AM ET. The first two rounds will start at 9:00 AM ET and the finals will start at NOON ET.
