North Branch, Minn.~ The opening round of Championship UTV: Hay Days Edition went to Can-AM’s Kyle Chaney, but Yamaha’s CJ Greaves stole the show on Sunday, with some movie-style theatrics mixed in.

After qualifying, Greaves and Chaney were set on the opposite sides of the grid, setting up a much-anticipated showdown between the top two drivers later in the Winners Bracket. Greaves did his part, winning his first three races over Arctic Cat’s Jeremy Houle, Saturday’s third place finisher Zak Zakowski and Arctic Cat’s Jack LeTourneau.

Chaney took care of business on his half of the bracket, taking wins against Yamaha’s Brian Waszak and Rodney Van Eperen and Polaris’ Ronnie Anderson, setting up a Winners Bracket showdown and one of three head-to-head meetings on the day.

In the first match-up, Greaves grabbed the win to send Chaney to the Losers Bracket. There Chaney once again met Anderson, who had gotten past LeTourneau to set-up the rematch. Chaney took the win to set up his second go-around against Greaves in what might become the signature moment from the inaugural Championship UTV event.

Close racing between the LOMSCL champions was the game all weekend long. In the final, Greaves grabbed the early lead and with one lap remaining took the mandatory Joker Lane to set up a close finish. As the duo pushed into the final turn, both cars came to a complete stop, with Chaney ahead by one car-length. Coming straight out of the movie Talladega Nights, both Chaney and Greaves unstrapped and jumped out of their UTV’s, then ran up the finish line hill and dove across the line. While the crowd was enthusiastic, race officials conceded the finish to Chaney, meaning the pair would face off for a third time with a winner-takes-all final race of the day.

The final brought fewer theatrics to event, and when both cars crossed the finish line, it was Greaves the victor, flipping the script on Chaney who had won on Saturday.

The race was awesome!” said Greaves after the race. “ISOC did a great job with the track, which provided great battles all day. Supper happy we were able to get good starts all day, and were able to walk away with the win.”

As for the first final, the pair said it was all in good fun, and something they wanted to do entertain the deep rows of spectators in attendance at the annual snowmobile extravaganza. Ronnie Anderson rounded out the podium in third.
